About

“Be Ye for law, or be ye for chaos?”

– Dr. J. E Holmes.

Chris Hately (he/him) is a professional games master and miniatures painter from the North East of England. With over ten years of game mastering in multiple game systems, and close to 30 years of modelling experience, he combines epic storytelling, grand 3D set pieces, and immersive soundscapes to provide unforgettable RPG adventures.

From open games in pubs and bars, to D&D in a Castle, Chris brings the same ethos to each and every game; to test his players, pushing both them and their characters to new heights, and giving them all the rope they need to succeed…or cause their own downfall.

Backstory

Born in the North East of England, Chris grew up with an abiding love of history and fiction. Raised on a diet of super heroes, Star Wars, and Warhammer 40,000, he spent much of his young life telling stories, writing game mechanics, and filling his head with all the history and lore he could. He was first introduced to roleplaying games properly at school (though his dad’s old copies of White Dwarf and the AD&D Monster Manual were no less formative), where his impulsive human fighter struggled through the brutal world of homebrewed AD&D. This simple school club led to an explosion of creativity, with whole worlds and new game systems developed in weeks.

Fast forward ten years, and Chris bought the Lost Mines of Phandelver boxed set. Since then he has run some form of RPG as often as possible, evangelised the incredible hobby that is roleplaying, and done everything he can to make it as easy as possible for anyone and everyone to play. He has run games for hundreds of people, a very many of whom were brand new to the hobby.

Most recently, Chris has worked with D&D in a Castle, an event run by Tabletop Vacations. This luxury D&D event brings passionate players together with celebrity DMs in the wonderful setting of Lumley Castle. From volunteer, to staff, to painting workshop leader, to one-shot DM, and finally the DM of the inaugural Youth Table, Chris has had the privilege of meeting some truly excellent people, to run games for many of them, and to refine his skills alongside some of the greatest names in the industry. He very much looks forward to continuing on that track, and to introducing the game to many more people in the years to come.
